Do you collect recycling?

Yes, we do. We realise that quite often space is at a premium, so if there isn't the facility to have separate bins for recycling, don't worry as the refuse is sorted later on, or different items can be bagged separately but placed in the one wheelie bin.

What happens to the refuse Star Refuse collects?

Accepted Answer

All the refuse is sorted and the items that can be recycled are recycled. The refuse that cannot be recycled is incinerated and used to generate electricity. None of the refuse Star Refuse collects ends up in landfill.

Question 3

I am surprised at my month's invoice as I only have a small wheelie bin?

Accepted Answer

We count each full black sack of refuse collected. Just because you have a small bin does not mean you will receive a small invoice for refuse. Quite often excess black bags are stacked on top of your full wheelie bin, by the side, or left inside the property and your housekeeper leaves them out when they come to clean.

My housekeeper says my bin was half empty, but you have invoiced me for a full bin?

Refuse is a big problem in St Ives. When visitors discover that their bin is full, they will search for a wheelie bin that has space for their excess rubbish — that could be yours. We advise your wheelie bin has a lock to prevent this. We can supply wheelie bins with locks and replacement keys.

Question 5

How many bags do you think I will be charged for?

Accepted Answer

Kitchen pedal bins vary between 30 to 40 litre capacity, therefore if your wheelie bin is a 240 litre size, we estimate around 6 bags of refuse. If you have a smaller wheelie bin, say 140 litre size, then we estimate 4 to 5 bags of refuse. Visitors on holiday produce far more refuse than at home.

My bills fluctuate greatly; is there anything you can do to help with budgeting?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we can offer a yearly contract where you pay a year's refuse collection in advance. Before you explore this avenue, you will need to work out how busy your rental is and be aware that once payment is made, there are no refunds within the year's contract. Will you collect loose refuse?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but we would ask that there is one of our notices displayed in your holiday home respectfully asking guests to only place refuse in bin bags. Due to the locations of properties in St Ives, our team have to carry your refuse some distance to our vehicle.

Question 8

Why do we have to pay Star Refuse to take away our refuse if we pay Council Tax?

Accepted Answer

The law states that refuse generated from a holiday let is classified as commercial waste and as such it must be removed by a registered private waste carrier such as Star Refuse. Whether you pay Council Tax or not, you still have to use a private waste collector to dispose of your refuse.

Question 9

Do you offer any other services apart from refuse collection?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We can remove and dispose of old furniture, beds, mattresses, white goods, ovens, cookers and microwaves. If your holiday home is undergoing renovations, we can take away wood, rubble, ceramic tiles and plasterboard. We can also take garden waste.

Question 10

Am I tied into a long contract with Star Refuse?

Accepted Answer

No. We are a small independent business and do not ask you to sign any contracts. It is a gentleman's agreement between us and you are free to leave at any time.

Question 11

Can I just use your service as a one off?

Accepted Answer

By all means. We can do a one-off refuse collection if your contractor has let you down, however you may want to decide on using Star Refuse going forward.

Question 12

How much notice do I need to give you of my bookings?

Accepted Answer

The more notice you can give us the better, as we plan our journeys in advance. Having said that, we realise sometimes there are emergency collections at the last minute. Being based in St Ives, we are best placed to be there, mostly within the hour, whilst our competitors are based many miles away.
